  • According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, a group that represents the tire industry, China is the top importer of tires to the United States, with slightly less than 32 million units in 2006. About 40 percent of the tires in the United States were imported in 2006, up from 21 percent in 1996, according to the association.   • More than 80 percent of ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C and also used as a preservative, comes from China... Chinese imports of xanthan gum, used to thicken dairy products and salad dressings, account for at least 40 percent of United States consumption.  (Source: Marginal Utility)

  • Despite a two-year effort to eliminate the threat of poisonous lead in inexpensive children’s jewelry, hundreds of thousands of tainted items are still being sold across the United States, the federal government has found (August 2007).  The unannounced federal inspections also left no doubt about the primary source of the threat: of the 17.9 million pieces of jewelry items pulled from the market since the start of 2005, 95 percent were made in China.
