Why?
For years I've been disgusted
over the shoddy workmanship of articles with the label "Made in China"... way
back (as I'm 'older than dirt') as a tailor who repaired fur coats in my
twenties, I noticed items brought in by customers increasingly failed to wear
even close to what I would have expected as a normal consumer... Especially
items marked as 'rabbit fur' if they had a label at all on them... Once inside
the garments, I went beyond disgusted as I saw how some of these garments were
constructed... And many proved to be beyond even my ability to repair!
Fast forward to news
articles that started appearing regarding the mass destruction of dogs in China
because of rabies... In a country that does not vaccinate against this deadly
disease, I read of pet owners who had their pet dogs ripped from their arms and
clubbed to death in front of them... Many of us united on the Internet and
signed petitions to voice our outrage at this atrocity going on...
Did we stop it?... Probably
not... What we (more than likely) stopped was the reporting of this, for I'm
sure the Chinese officials simply tightened down the security measures and
confiscated more cameras and notes from reporters... We already know they limit
the access to the Internet for the Chinese people...
Watching
human rights
violations being reported in China, I was surfing one night on this topic and I
stumbled upon articles surrounding the fur trade market and literally had to go
throw up when I viewed undercover videos taken of this fur trade market about
two hours outside of Beijing... At that point I devoted many hours to further
researching this issue because an uneducated consumer is an ignorant one... When
I realized that every part of these dogs and cats are used (clear down to the
bones which are boiled down into glue for Chinese manufacturing processes), I
was shocked...
Shocked at the outbreaks of
salmonella caused by rawhide chewies brought in from Taiwan and the Far East to
European countries... Shocked after I went to my local pet and discount stores
to see for myself exactly how many toys and items were unlabeled fur items... I
was dumbfounded... The problem was MUCH worse than I realized... I came into the
fight against the dog and cat fur trade late (2005), for there are many others
who have been battling this horrible industry for YEARS...
Long being a label reader, I
became increasingly irritated by the news of the delays our country and its
legislators allowed to go on regarding a lack of
COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) - how
was I given a choice in what to buy when products were not labeled as to where
they (or their components) came from?... To me this is a basic right - the right
to be informed by those I trust - to insure laws already enacted are being
enforced and when there is a need to further insure the safety of the general
public, to make it happen - OVER and above influential powerful lobbying
factions of manufactuers...
In 2006 I told myself I would
not, under any circumstances, support the 2008 Olympics being held in Beijing,
especially after I learned the equine competitions had been moved from
Beijing... I guess having many foreign animal lovers that close to the fur trade
market was more than the Chinese officials could tolerate... They might actually
take it upon themselves to make a trip to see for themselves... I thought I was
alone in this position until I found others who also feel we should
boycott the Olympics... In fact there are many who feel they
should boycott the Olympics
being held in Beijing based upon all of these factors, not withstanding the lack
of human rights in China...
As the year continued on, the
news of the massive dog massacres hit the
airways and Internet... How can a government kill over 50,000 dogs in less than
four days... Charges sprang up later these dogs' carcasses were taken to the fur
trade market... Who knows?... After all, it IS China, ya know?
And then the
pet food recall hit in 2007...
Discovering how shoddy "quality" inspections are done, how little this industry
is actually monitored and how much of a part the Chinese played in it all, I
listened to friends tell me the heartbreak of losing one of their pets to this
horrific failure in our government to keep our furkids safe...
This, combined with the
recalls
in toys, tires and just about any other category of products manufactured in
China forced me to do something... This website might not do much more than to
cause you to think and/or look for a label on the next thing you buy... But if
it does that, it has fulfilled its mission...

I said
that for China the first imperative was ‘survival’, but I must immediately add
that by ‘survival’ I do not merely mean to eke a living by disgraceful means...
